This fall, we asked ourselves a simple question: how can we help nonprofits gain more donors on RoundUp App? The answer: our Fall into Change sweepstakes!

Between September 22nd and December 1st, we tasked nonprofits with a simple goal of signing up new donors. Any nonprofit that gained 10+ donors during this period was given a shot at winning a $1,000 donation straight from RoundUp App. But, wait there’s more! We also rewarded the nonprofit that brought in the most donors with a $500 donation from RoundUp App.

Hundreds of nonprofits and donors joined us during this period and started taking advantage of our effortless platform for donating. However, only two could win the main prizes.

And the winners are….

Drumroll please! Our two awesome winners are Goats of Anarchy and Food for the Hungry! Goats of Anarchy took home our grand prize, a $1,000 donation, and Food for the Hungry took home the second prize of signing up the most donors!

Congrats to both nonprofits, and a special round of applause to every single nonprofit that joined and participated in our sweepstakes! Keep reading to learn more about our two winners and the great work they do.

An animal sanctuary with a great brand and even greater cause

Our $1,000 winner, Goats of Anarchy describes themselves as a “farm animal sanctuary dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of goats with disabilities.” We’ve written about them before, and suffice to say, they’re un-baa-leviable (okay that’s a reused joke). They leverage their strong social media assets to promote their RoundUp App program and make targeted and repeated asks of their audience.

When we reached out to them about the prize they had this to say: “We are thrilled!!! As you may know, we are a 501c3 nonprofit for farmed animals. We specialize in goats with disabilities and many of them use wheeled carts or prostheses for mobility. We will be using your donation toward the next set of prostheses that we get for one of our animals in need! Thank you so much! We are so grateful!!!”

You can follow their journey on their awesome instagram account or start donating to them from RoundUp App!

A nonprofit dedicated to changing a child’s future

Food for the Hungry is a nonprofit dedicated to ending poverty. They believe “poverty is complex and everchanging…that ending poverty requires more than just providing raw resources.” and take a holistic approach to ending poverty.

The work they do is focused on “intentional and purposeful community development” and have a four-phased approach to the work they do. Food for the Hungry has a number of diverse programs they support, including emergency seed support, covid-19 response, primary health services for refugees, and so many more.

Here’s what their Chief Development Officer, Ryan Brown, had to say about their win and their experience with RoundUp App:

“We’re honored to be working with RoundUp App and honored to be a recipient of the Fall Sweepstakes donation. The sweepstakes donation, as well as the donations from our new RoundUp App donors, are being directed to our Children in Crisis fund. The Children in Crisis fund allows us to respond quickly and effectively in the wake of natural disasters and other potentially catastrophic circumstances. Over the last year, Children in Crisis funds have been some of the very first dollars we’ve deployed to meeting the needs after the August 2021 Haiti earthquake as well as providing life-saving support in the current drought in Eastern Africa.”

You can learn more about Food for the Hungry at their website or join them on RoundUp App.

We’re thrilled to see the growth both of these nonprofits have had this fall and can’t wait to see what they do next. A special round of applause is also needed for each and every nonprofit and donor who signed up during this period. Together, you really made a difference and made this fall a true season of change.

Who

Lane of Roses is a nonprofit run by women for women. Their work is community focused with a goal to create safe spaces and a thriving network of support for their members. Like any nonprofit organization, fundraising is vital to ensure that their work continues and their mission expands to bless a growing base of constituents.

This nonprofit registered with RoundUp App and quickly grasped the ’round up’ appeal. They shared the idea with their supporters in a focused push that results in new recurring and (dare we say) blooming revenue.

Why RoundUp App

“It’s super easy and so helpful to all nonprofits. It’s also just a really good idea. And when I tell others about RoundUp App it’s always one of those ‘Wow. What a great idea’ reactions.”

– Rebekah Perryman, Executive Director

How did they do it?

Lane of Roses concentrated their efforts on a word-of-mouth strategy and promoted the program at their fundraising events over the course of 60 days, which included community events, bible studies, and even a pop-up shop!

Hosts would first announce RoundUp App as a way to give and then ask people to download the app during the event with a quick ‘how to sign up’ demonstration. During pop-up shop events they displayed signage with a QR code leading to the donor signup form.

They also sent RoundUp App appeals via donor emails, social media posts and text messages. Lane of Roses found that asking people individually (either in person or through emails or text messages) was the most effective way to onboard new donors directly.

RoundUp App Lane of Roses call-to-action

Within a focused timeframe, they consistently communicated across all their platforms that they could do a lot with a little through RoundUp App.

“We use RoundUp App as an option for someone who isn’t sure they can sign up to give monthly, but they feel comfortable rounding up their change,” Perryman said. That messaging resonated with supporters who wanted to be able to contribute and still feel comfortable about giving within their financial means.

What was the impact?

Lane of Roses gained over 50 donors in two months, resulting in tens of thousands of dollars in new recurring revenue over time.

The recurring donations from RoundUp App help Lane of Roses to cover the cost of basic needs that are hard to fundraise for, such as office supplies and rent. And with positive feedback from donors, they have found RoundUp App to be easy and user-friendly.

Takeaways

Maybe we are looking at this through rose-colored glasses but we think a donation stream that you can count on is worth its weight in spare change. This success story shows once again that a focused campaign leveraging all platforms can create real fundraising momentum.

Like Lane of Roses, your RoundUp App campaign will benefit most from these key elements:

  • Select a designated time frame to promote your RoundUp App program
    • This can be 2 weeks or 2 months. Whatever range you choose, be consistent and share multiple times across all your marketing platforms and at events.
  • Keep your messaging clear and repeated
    • “We can do a lot with a little when you round up”
    • “Help us change the world with your spare change”
    • “Help us get to ## new donors”
  • Make signup accessible

All alone, a single rose is nice and lovely. But add a bunch of roses together and you get a beautiful bouquet. The same is true for spare change! On its own, while appreciated, it does not carry a large impact. But when you add donations from many RoundUp App donors together, you can accomplish so much more!

Still unsure about best practices? Schedule a call with us or send us your questions!

Can you change a pet’s life with your spare change? That’s the question that Wild Hearts, a Chicago-based nonprofit boldly asked over the course of a four-week campaign.

Wild Hearts provides ongoing and comprehensive support to animals with mobility issues, and gives hope to pet owners along the way. Their reach already spans 7 countries and they have no intention of slowing down.

Donations of any kind, amount and frequency are impactful for nonprofits, and particularly for small- to mid-sized organizations. But how can a nonprofit that has historically received one-time donations create a recurring donor base in a matter of weeks?

“To be able to quickly add recurring monthly donors is huge for us, and it allows us to help more of the community that we serve,” Erin Kowalski, Wild Hearts Executive Director and Founder, reflected.

Wild Hearts approached the opportunity to build a recurring donor base with full force. Over the course of four weeks they leveraged the easy ask of “spare change” donations using RoundUp App over social media, email, web and within their community. The result was a new, recurring monthly revenue stream.

“As a nonprofit, the additional funds coming in every month allow us to make better informed decisions on programming, especially when it comes to approving animal sponsorships,” noted Kowalski.

Wild Hearts RoundUp App Facebook image

Wild Hearts’ Four Week Campaign Strategy

  • Asked board members to reach out to a minimum of 10 personal contacts
  • Added a RoundUp App logo and link on their website homepage
  • Posted weekly on Facebook
  • Posted twice on Instagram, with Stories 2-3 days in a row at the launch of the campaign, midway and the last three days
  • Sent four targeted emails
  • Added a RoundUp App link in the footer of their staff email signatures

The success of the campaign has materially allowed them to sponsor animals that they would otherwise have had to turn away.

And for the donors, Wild Hearts continues to reinforce their mission and nourish relationships using clear messaging and images on social media. Consistent, ongoing communications help personalize every penny donated. Wild Hearts even includes the names, furry faces and stories of real pets that RoundUp App donations help them support.

“As a donor, it is nice to not really think about having to make a donation. To be able to ‘set it and forget it’ is really nice,” Erin added.

On a Friday afternoon in January, we got a call from Kathy Lipman, the Senior Manager of Corporate Engagement at the Houston Food Bank with a problem. They had some very special guests coming on Monday morning to spend time with the volunteers, but no one had registered for the shift…

“On Friday afternoon I called [RoundUp App] in need of volunteers for a Monday morning. [RoundUp App] was able to help 3x our volunteer count and had the most success of any method. Thank you [RoundUp App] – we couldn’t do it without you!”
Kathy Lipman, the Senior Manager of Corporate Engagement

Since we started RoundUp App, we had a strong belief that donors prefer a call to action via text. On average it takes less than 40 seconds to read and respond to a text; an email takes 3 minutes… that weekend with the Food Bank proved that. In the span of 2 hours, the RoundUp Team and the Food Bank crafted a series of texts to send to volunteers, who had been texted previously from the past few weeks.

On average it takes less than 40 seconds to read and respond to a text. An email takes 3 minutes…

Houston Food Bank sample volunteer text

The text was simple: “Hey {first_name}, we are so grateful that you came out during the holidays. Would you consider helping us during a slower volunteer time this Monday 1/13? We’ll have special guests from our community excited to work with volunteers. We have volunteer shifts available at 8a-12p and 1-4p. Would you partner with us on an
exciting day? Click here to register!

When our team crafts a message like this, we follow some simple rules:

1. Make it personal. Address the user by name, remind them of their visit, make it clear you care. With our texting portal, you can do all of this by adding “personalization tokens”.
2. Make it clear. Unlike email, texts cant be pages long – they have to be succinct. That is one of the reasons, we rarely encourage messaging via email. They are too long and get deleted too quickly.
3. Add action items. Give someone a link, a way to respond or an image to see. These allow the user to take immediate action, when they are looking at the message. Most importantly, if you provide a link, make sure the website is mobile friendly (go to it on your phone before send the link to everyone).

For the Food Bank, the response was overwhelming. In a matter of hours, dozens of people were signing up for the volunteer shift. They were responding the texts positively and some people thanked us for the message and politely declined. Regardless of the individual response, it shows engagement.

From Friday afternoon to Monday morning the Houston Food Bank added 107 volunteers. Allowing several Astros players (MLB team) to work with the volunteers to pack thousands of meals for Houstonians.

In March, 2020, the world went through a dramatic metamorphosis. Businesses not deemed essential closed their doors, people stayed inside and the world slowed down. But in this same instant, nonprofits around the world became essential to their communities. Simultaneously, funding slowed down as the economy ground to a halt. Global Outreach Developments (G.O.D) International took this as a challenge. In the middle of a global pandemic, G.O.D. International successfully found growth on Giving Tuesday Now with a campaign aimed at their donor base.

The Organization added 76 of new donors in 8 days, resulting in tens of thousands of donations over time.

They were strategic and targeted in their approach. As we all know, repetition is key when making an ask like this. To an audience of just under 700 people, they send a series of three emails and published three social media posts.

G.O.D. International Giving Tuesday Now Instagram post promoting RoundUp App

Each email and post had a clear call to action. The emails focused on the ask, “We need to sign up people for Giving Tuesday and when we do, we could win $1,000”. Facebook and Instagram mirrored these messages, but in a mobile format, often targeting younger demographics.

If you notice, the images on the social media posts illustrate the impact of the organization, while asking for people to sign up using their custom registration link: roundup.app/p/godintl.

Using a custom registration link is key to converting a call to action into a registration. The conversion rate is significantly higher than without one.

In addition, they used word-of-mouth to excite their donors. They shared how much they have raised, how many donors they have, and pushed people to be the one the help them win the $1,000 grant. In all, they were able to drive account growth following a formula that your organization can use too. Learn more about using RoundUp App for your nonprofit today!

You’ve Goat to Be Kidding Me: How 5 Days Brought in Thousands

Goats of Anarchy is an animal sanctuary that rescues and rehabilitates goats with disabilities. When they partnered with RoundUp App, we were baa-rely able to contain our excitement for their launch campaign!

Kid Stuff

When it came time to fundraise, Goats of Anarchy leveraged their social media assets to promote their RoundUp App program. Following the golden-round-up rule of fundraising, they made a repeated ‘ask’ within a concentrated time frame. The repetition of messaging garnered them quick results that we are hoofs over tails to tell you about.

Additionally, the use of compelling animal images and clear language helped supporters to confidently sign up to donate to Goats of Anarchy, knowing that their coins go directly to aid their adorable silly billys.

Promotion Strategy and Revenue Ram-ifications

Here’s the promotion calendar Goats of Anarchy followed for their RoundUp App launch campaign:

  • 3 Facebook posts over the course of 5 days, resulting in 143 shares and 130 comments.
  • 3 Instagram posts over the course of 5 days, resulting in 27,000 likes.
Goats of Anarchy Instagram Post

Those social media posts allowed Goats of Anarchy to gain 137 new RoundUp App donors in under a week! That should translate to over $2,000 per month in new recurring revenue.

To continue growing their program, Goats of Anarchy added RoundUp App to their Support page. Their RoundUp App section clearly outlines how RoundUp App works and uses a distinct call-to-action.
